STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH

May 1, 2011: Earlier this evening, President Obama called to inform me that American forces killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al Qaeda network that attacked America on September 11, 2001. I congratulated him and the men and women of our military... and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude. This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.

U.S. officials say the photographic evidence shows bin Laden was shot above his left eye, blowing away part of his skull.  He was also shot in the chest, they said. This, near the end of a frenzied firefight in a high-walled Pakistani compound where helicopter-borne U.S. forces found 23 children, nine women, a bin Laden courier who had unwittingly led the U.S. to its target, a son of bin Laden who was also slain, and more.

Bin Laden had lived at the fortified compound for six years, officials said, putting him far from the lawless and harsh Pakistani frontier where he had been assumed to be hiding out.

They said SEALs dropped down ropes from helicopters, killed bin Laden aides and made their way to the main building. Obama and his national security team monitored the strike, watching and listening nervously and in near silence from the Situation Room as it all unfolded.  "The minutes passed like days," Brennan said.

U.S. officials said the information that ultimately led to bin Laden's capture originally came from detainees held in secret CIA prison sites in Eastern Europe. There, agency interrogators were told of an alias used by a courier whom bin Laden particularly trusted. It took four long years to learn the man's real name, then years more before investigators got a big break in the case, these officials said.

Sometime in mid-2010, the courier was overheard using a phone by intelligence officials, who then were able to locate his residence - the specially constructed $1 million compound with walls as high as 18 feet topped with barbed wire.

U.S. counterterrorism officials considered bombing the place, an option that was discarded by the White House as too risky, particularly if it turned out bin Laden was not there.

Instead, Obama signed an order on Friday for the team of SEALs to chopper onto the compound under the cover of darkness.

In addition to bin Laden, one of his sons was killed in the raid, Brennan said. Bin Laden's wife was shot in the calf but survived, a U.S. official said. Also killed were the courier, and the courier's wife and brother, U.S. intelligence officials believe.

Some people found at the compound were left behind when the SEALs withdrew and were turned over to Pakistani authorities who quickly took over control of the site, officials said. They identified the trusted courier as Kuwaiti-born Sheikh Abu Ahmed, who had been known under the name Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti.

Within 40 minutes, the operation was over, and the SEALs flew out - minus the helicopter that had to be destroyed. Bin Laden's remains were flown to the USS Carl Vinson, then lowered into the North Arabian Sea.

Bin Laden's death came 15 years after he declared war on the United States. Al-Qaida was also blamed for the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa that killed 224 people and the 2000 attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors in Yemen, as well as countless other plots, some successful and some foiled.

They've Got Talent

Aubrey blew me away this week when she announced that she was going to be in the talent show at school.

Mind you, this is the same girl that makes every effort to avoid being in the spotlight in any kind of way.  When she first told me about the talent show a few weeks prior, I encouraged her to participate in it.  I got that look of "Are you crazy?" so I dropped the issue and didn't think anymore of it.

Why the change of heart?

She informed me that she was joining a group of kids from her band class....I guess that would explain it, she's wasn't going solo.  Rigdon and I decided that we'd go and watch her play.

Since Aubrey didn't want to be the only girl in the group, she recruited another girl to play with her.

The gym was packed.

Happy Easter!

The greatest man in history had no servants, yet they called him Master. Had no degree, yet they called him Teacher. Had no medicine, yet they called him Healer. He had no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet he conquered the world. He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him. He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.

Happy Easter everyone!

This year included all the typical Easter traditions that I'm sure many families out there celebrate.   Coloring Easter eggs:

Easter Morning:
The kids raced out of their rooms this morning, looking for their baskets that the Easter Bunny had hidden.

Easter Bunny was pretty sneaky this year:

Aubrey's basket was in the oven:

Connor's was underneath the kitchen sink. Gotta love getting socks for Easter, right?

Rigdon's - Bunny tried to make it a little easier for him.

Ronin was the last one to find his:
(Um, don't mind the load of laundry that's been sitting in there for about two days now...I'll get to it, eventually.)

Later this morning, we went to our weekly Sunday church meetings.  The 3 oldest kids all participated by singing in the Easter program for Sacrament Meeting.Behind all the "normal, well-behaved" pictures...

are the ones you have to get through first.

It all starts so innocently with a simple funny face.
Then it's all down hill from there:

Then the silliness spreads like an infectious disease.

Showing off the new socks...the kids were actually pretty stoked about them.  They desperately needed some new ones.

Rigdon with his Stripling Warrior action figure.
He's watched enough Living Scriptures videos to know exactly who this guy is.

Easter Egg Hunt @ the Grandparent's House
After church, I took the kids and headed over to my parent's house.  We ate dinner and then held the much anticipated Easter egg hunt.

My brother Cory and his family were there too, yay!  Of course, that means extra competition for those hidden eggs.  :)  Just kidden, there were plenty to go around.

Rigdon and Brooklyn had their own special egg hunt.  They scored well.

Gettin' a little extra sugar.

The older kids had their hunt out by the horse pasture - there were 53 eggs to find.

Just so happens my aunt, uncle, and cousin were out with the horses today.

My mom 'n nephew, Sterling.

With all these kids, it was quick work of finding all the eggs.
One of those rare occasions where there's actually a picture with me in it.  :)

My Dad announcing a surprise bonus hunt - a single egg with $20 in it!  I'm so in.

Connor outsmarted us all and found the egg first.

He was quite excited.  He already knew what he wanted to buy with it...a video game.

Enjoying the spoils of the hunt.

The kids had a little bit of tramp time.

Just like last year, Easter happened to be one of those few occasions where Rigdon was struggling breathing.  I stuck him on his nebulizer.

We had a beautiful, spiritual, fun-filled Easter.   Hope you had a great one too!

PS: Rigdon threw up tonight AFTER I gave him a bath.  I suspect it was from too much candy.  :/   Gave him another bath.  Ah, the joys of motherhood.
